Outdoor Lighting for Safety and Security Working Group

The Environmental Safety and Risk Management (ESRM) Committee has convened a working group to examine exterior lighting for campus safety and security. The working group is made up of representatives from the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Facilities, Housing and Real Estate Services, the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, and the Graduate School, as well as other campus partners as needed. Short and long term goals of the working group include:

Short Term

  • Create a central reporting mechanism for the campus community to raise specific areas of concern
  • Evaluate reported concerns and complete corrective actions when indicated
  • Communicate to the campus community regarding existing lighting standards and what to expect regarding exterior lighting on campus

Long Term

  • Assist with updating the campus lighting master plan using an external vendor
  • Evaluate and expand opportunities for student involvement in campus nighttime safety and security walks, including timing, frequency and campus coverage
  • Recommend and establish long term governance for exterior lighting safety and security issues

In the interim, members of the campus community can report specific exterior campus lighting concerns here. Please be as specific as possible and include your contact information in order to facilitate follow up.
