Video: Leading a Safe Research Lab

June 1, 2017

Holden Thorp is the Rita Levi-Montalcini Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at the Washington University St. Louis and the former chair of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Creating a Culture of Safety in Academic Chemical Research.

In this informative video, he outlines Principal Investigator responsibilities in the research laboratory.

“Faculty and staff… often do not understand or appreciate the hazards that are present in their work settings,” Thorp notes.

Principal investigators must lead by example, he says, holding students, staff and visitors to appropriate safety and compliance expectations.
